Salem Thirunangaigal Nala Sangam (STNS) is a non-profit, memberdriven organization founded in 2007. STNS’s mission is to represent and work with transgenders community, including their families, by providing support and education, and by advocating for equality, rights and access to services. STNS works to bring about positive social change and ensue that transgendered people are understood, accepted and respected and can participate fully in all aspects of Indian society.

Salem Thirunangaigal Nala Sangam (STNS) is a community based organization formed in 2007 in the name of Salem Aravanigal TAI Vizhudugal Trust (SATVT). It was re-registered as a society in 2012 as Salem Thirunangaigal Nala Sangam. The CBO had been carrying out the activities with the support from Tamil Nadu AIDS Initiatives- Voluntary Health Services (TAI-VHS), Chennai, Individual donors and local support groups in Salem district. Salem Thirunangaigal Nala Sangam (STNS) is one among the Community Based Organisations which works for the MSM (Men having sex with men) and TGs (Transgender). It also gets the financial support through TAI-VHS for Social Protection Program. The activities dwell under the social protection programme on the following broad arena: • Organizational sustainability, • Economic empowerment, • Health empowerment, • Social empowerment, Networking/linkages and Advocacy. The project caters to Transgenders and MSMs addressing their multi-faceted needs strive for holistic empowerment and advocate for policy level changes. STNS working towards the prevalence of HIV/AIDS among the vulnerable population in the community and to provide quality services for their sexual health needs, lessen the overall incidents of STI’s (Sexually Transmitted Infections), HIV/AIDS through focused holistic interventions through enabling environment and empowering the community to seek safe sexual behaviour. The CBO has the members from 20 Blocks and the current membership strength is 2100. STNS comprise of nine executive members which includes five office bearers and six board members
Over the past year, there has been growing recognition of the importance of social protection to respond to a range of challenges faced by developing countries, including food insecurity, chronic poverty and the HIV pandemic. Towards mitigating the impact of transgender life and eradicating poverty, STNS facilitated access to and uptake of social protection schemes for the members of TG community. During this year STNS has facilitated to access to social protection schemes. ❖ 56 Transgender has obtained Transgender card, ❖ 165 Transgender has obtained Ration card, ❖ 62 Transgender has obtained Voter ID, ❖ 162 Transgender has obtained Aadhar card, ❖ 32 Transgender has obtained Pan card, ❖ 2 Transgender has obtained Passport, ❖ 8 Transgender has obtained Driving license, ❖ 12 Transgender has obtained Income certificate, ❖ 81 Transgender has obtained Nativity certificate, ❖ 37 Transgender has obtained Medical certificate, ❖ 38 Transgender has obtained Village administration certificate, ❖ 68 Transgender has obtained Support for unsolicited transgenders, ❖ 8 Transgender has obtained applied for Gazette name changed.
Salem Thirunangaigal Nala Sangam conducted the LCUKY DRAW PROGRAMME held in STNS Office. The lenders received Rs.114700 through the bank. From this programme the prizes were awarded. The first prize was 4 gram gold, silver presentation of the second prize, the third prize was given to silk saris for ten persons. This found union was firm for the growth.
Under the society security scheme for the association members individual bank accounts initiatives, together with small groups has combining 11 self-help groups. Under the health insurance schemes we helped them in getting medical insurance. The Prime minister’s scheme “JEEVAN JOTHI YOJANA AAM AATHMI BEEMA YOJANA” was active in progress. The post office programme “KISAAN VIKAS PATHIRAM , MONTHLY EARNING SCHEME, SENIOR CITIZENS SAVING SCHEME , SELVA MAGAL AND SELVA MAGAN SCHEME ” are the schemes which active in progress.
Salem Thirunangaigal Nala Sangam celebrated the Transgender day On April 15, 2015, the Transgender day was celebrated in the district collectorate of Salem. This day was lead by Ms. Pooja - President of STNS, Ms. Gopika – Secretary of STNS and MS. Rasiga – Treasurer of STNS.More about sweets among the general public and about the transgender awareness has been created. The main aim and the purpose of celebration of this Transgender day is to dignify the transgender those who have achieved in their life in different sector and those who have achieved in the self-employment.
Medical camp was held by STNS inorder for the well being of the transgender community and this medical camp was mainly held for seeing Cardiac related issues and Dental related issues. Skill development programme for transgenders Transgender demand was addressed to the members of the council Awareness meeting for Young transgenders regarding safe sex Skill development programme Separate toilet facility for transgender Press meeting World transgender unity day was conducted Advocacy meeting was held to media members Mayuron committee meeting was held and the MSM took part eagerly in the meeting World AIDS Day was celebrated and the Rally was conducted. Awareness programme was conducted to transgender and the donors took part in providing guidance.
