Salem Thirunangaigal Nala Sangam (STNS) is a non-profit, member-driven organization founded in 2007. STNS’s mission is to represent and work with transgender community, including their families, by providing support and education, and by advocating for equality, rights and access to services. STNS works to bring about positive social change and ensue that transgendered people are understood, accepted and respected and can participate fully in all aspects of Indian society.

1. To identify the needs of the poor and vulnerable transgender community and rectifying them. 2. To improve the physical & psychological well-being of the transgender community. 3. To address violence in the major areas including: Sexual rights Harassment violence in view of gender identity Denial of basic human rights including health care Denial of social justice 4. To prevent STI/HIV/AIDS among MSM/Transgender and their sexual partners. 5. To avail government social protection programmes. 6. To improve savings habits. 7. To develop resources for ensuring community led intervention and social mobilization to bring sustainable change and to improve the CBO system to sustain the CBO ownership for sustainability the project.

It is enriching to be part of an organization driven by passionate and dedicated individuals - Staff, Volunteers, Donors, Well-wishers and Board of Members. It is through their passion and hard work that Salem Thirunangaigal Nala Sangam (STNS) has continued to make good progress towards achieving its mission " Ensuring quality life of TG/MSM by enhancing basic human rights, quality health care, reduced stigma and discrimination and access to all the services provided by the government” an organization of excellence, which operates on its values and ethics and provides the best services to poor and downtrodden. We thank Tamil Nadu AIDS Initiative (TAI) – Voluntary Health Services (VHS), NGOs, Positive Networks and other Transgenders Networks. 2013 was an eventful year and our organization has strengthened its base as it advances closer towards realizing its ambitious vision. Yes, once again I am proud to present the annual report for the year 2012- 2013 of our organisation.
Salem Thirunangaigal Nala Sangam (STNS) is a community based organization formed in 2007 in the name of Salem Aravanigal TAI Vizhudugal Trust (SATVT). It was re-registered as a society in 2012 as Salem Thirunangaigal Nala Sangam. The CBO had been carrying out the activities with the support from Tamil Nadu AIDS Initiatives- Voluntary Health Services (TAI-VHS), Chennai, Individual donors and local support groups in Salem district. Salem Thirunangaigal Nala Sangam (STNS) is one among the Community Based Organisations which works for the MSM (Men having sex with men) and TGs (Transgender). It also gets the financial support through TAIVHS for Social Protection Program. The activities dwell under the social protection programme on the following broad arena: ❖ Organizational sustainability, ❖ Economic empowerment, ❖ Health empowerment, ❖ Social empowerment, Networking/linkages and Advocacy.
Over the past decade, there has been growing recognition of the importance of social protection to respond to a range of challenges faced by developing countries, including food insecurity, chronic poverty and the HIV pandemic. Towards mitigating the impact of transgender life and eradicating poverty, STNS facilitated access to and uptake of social protection schemes for the members of TG community. During this year STNS has facilitated to access to social protection. ❖ 56 Transgender has obtained Ration cards ❖ 101 Transgender has obtained Voter ID ❖ 302 Transgender has obtained Aadhar card ❖ 71 Transgender has obtained Pan card ❖ 7 Transgender has obtained Passport ❖ 8 Transgender has obtained Driving license ❖ 80 Transgender has obtained Income certificate ❖ 75 Transgender has obtained Nativity certificate ❖ 201 Transgender has obtained Medical certificate
Mayuran committee meeting was held in September 7, 2016. The members of Mayuran committee such as MSM participated eagerly in the Mayuran meeting.
Under the economic financial security , the bank account was opened for the association members and then we formed many small groups and we combined that small groups as self-help groups. Under the health insurance schemes we helped them in getting medical insurance. The Prime minister’s scheme “JEEVAN
This intervention was provided under TANSACS (Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society). This intervention was provided to 10 blocks such as Omalur, Machery, Kolathur, Tharamangalam, Nangavalli, Edapaddi, Konganapuram, Sangagiri, Veerapaandi, Magudansavadi. For this 10 blocks we are providing disease prevention activities such as HIV test, STD’s test , TB test and all medical check-ups for the people
The Salem Thirunangaigal Nala Sangam has organised many training programmes such as handcraft training programmes, beautician training programmes, computer skills development training progrmmes, ornaments making training programme. The legal awareness programme and mobile apps handling programme was conducted to the working members and staff members of STNS.
STNS is highly concentrating in the health of the targeted communities. So, the STNS is providing ART therapy to the needed people and the STNS is regularly following up the people taking ART and we are providing healthy food items which is needed for the people under ART. STNS also helping the people in Government health insurance schemes.
Skill development programme for transgenders Transgender demand was addressed to the members of the council Awareness meeting for Young transgenders regarding safe sex Skill development programme Separate toilet facility for transgender Press meeting World transgender unity day was conducted Advocacy meeting was held to media members Mayuron committee meeting was held and the MSM took part eagerly in the meeting World AIDS Day was celebrated and the Rally was conducted. Awareness programme was conducted to transgender and the donors took part in providing guidance.
STNS has selected and provided training to the second line leaders and 45 champions of 20 blocks. This second line leaders with the help of champions in the block will provide social protection, financial security and help the community members when they are in need and facing violence. If this second line leaders and champions cannot able to face violence they will call the programme manager for helping the violence and to handle the situation , the programme manager will reach the spot to support the people when they are in need. If the programme manger cannot able to handle the situation they will contact and take the help of board members.
The proposal for CONNECT project has been sent to Humsafer Trust and the International Trans fund applied. The proposal for DIVA project also has been applied. The awareness programmes was conducted to young transgender and MSM regarding “safe sex”. The STNS planned to conduct awareness programme for the school and college students for crating awareness towards the problems, discrimination and violence facing by the transgender in the school and colleges. The main aim of this awareness programme towards school and college students is to create comfortable and peaceful learning environment for the transgender community.
STNS organised the “CULTURAL FEST” during the month of January 29, 2017 in Nehru stadium, Old bus stand, Salem. This cultural fest was started with the welcome note by Ms. Pooja, President, Ms. Jeeva Amma, Nayak and Ms.Vijay Amma, Nayak . For this cultural fest Salem district collector Mr.Sambath & actress Ms. Kowsalya has came to this cultural fest. The Grade-2 social welfare officer Ms. Parimala Devi has been invited as the chief guest for this function. The volunteers who gave their presence during the function has provided funds for us. The members of STNS has took part and helped to organise this cultural fest.
Members of Salem District Transgenders Welfare Association celebrated the Transgenders Day by cutting cake and distributing it to the public here on Friday. Led by their grievances, Transgenders Welfare Board was established on April 15, 2008.Hnce, the day was observed as transgenders Day, they added. Transgenders in the district were demanding reservation in government jobs and in educational institutions so that they could improve their livelihood and participation in society. They were also demanding implementation of various schemes after the Supreme Court on April 15,2015 recognised the transgender community as ‘third gender’. The district administration has constructed 68 houses for the transgenders at Rs.1.08 crore under the Indira Awaas Yojana in T.Konagapadi in Tharamangalam last year.
